Hannah Whittenbury, who works at Specsavers on The Birtles, is tackling the 13.1 mile run in memory of her grandmother, who died of cancer last year.

Miss Whittenbury, 31, of Hale, says: ‘The training has been hard and I have had to go out and pound the streets in all weathers, but I’m confident I’ll be ready by the time the run comes around later this month.

‘As well as losing my grandmother to cancer, my Mum has also had breast cancer and I just felt that I needed to give something back to the people who provide so much support to those who are suffering from this terrible disease.

‘Specsavers got the ball rolling for me by sponsoring me £250, but that still leaves a lot more money to be raised if I’m going to hit my target, so I’m still looking for more people to sponsor me.’

Anthony Showman, store director at Specsavers Wythenshawe, adds: ‘We’ve seen the amount of hard work Hannah has put in, alongside training to become an optician here, and we couldn’t help but admire her effort.

‘Everyone here has really got behind her and we’ll be out on the day cheering her on.’

The Wilmslow Half Marathon takes place on Sunday 27th March.
