Read more...The Manchester United Foundation and Parkway Green Housing Trust joined together to bring the Premier League Trophy to Wythenshawe.

Fred The Red and United Legend Denis Irwin brought the trophy to Parkway Green House in Northenden so customers and staff could have the chance to get their picture taken with the celebrated trophy.

Parkway Green work in partnership with the Manchester United Foundation on a number of different projects including a scheme to provide free football coaching to young people in the local area.

Read more...Four hundred contestants crossed the finish line in the third of the four 5k Sale Sizzlers in Wythenshawe Park.

Britain’s No.1 steeplechaser Stuart Stokes, recovering from surgery, just missed the course record of 14.23 by just three seconds and was followed home by National Cross-Country champion Steve Vernon with international Ben Fish also well under 15 minutes.

The country’s top marathoner Tarus Elly finished 4th but still ran his fastest time since 2007. Among the women, 2007 European Junior 3000m finalist and World XC Championship representative, Stockport’s Jessica Coulson ran a PB of 16.32.

Among the age groups, fast improving Callum Greenwood (SHM) made his 5k debut in 15:49; Vet-40 Paul Mannion (Astley&TRR) clocked his fastest 5k...

 

Another Sizzling Success

Read more...South Manchester was ‘sizzling’ not because of the weather but the second of four 5k runs for all abilities in Wythenshawe Park.

Famously known as The Sale Sizzlers, this time more than 350 raced, ran, jogged or shuffled the 5 kilometres route around the park’s scenic paths all with the aim of getting faster, fitter and healthier.

Every finisher was rewarded with goody bags sponsored by Kelloggs, with Ronhill providing valuable sportswear prizes for the age-category winners.

For those who like to run enjoyed May’s Gt. Manchester Run or ran a Race for Life Series and want another mass participation for every ability, the remaining two runs are on Thursdays July 28th and August 11th (7.30pm) at Sale Harriers athletic track off Wythenshawe Road...

 

Free Summer Swimming

Read more...Young people aged under 16 are being reminded that they can have a splashing time during the summer holidays – for free.

Manchester City Council has maintained its commitment to free swimming for both the under 16s and the over 60s despite national funding being withdrawn.

Government funding was put in place in place in 2009 to enable everyone aged 16 and under or over 60 to swim for free at public swimming pools as part of a drive to encourage more people to be active and healthy.

But when government scrapped the funding in 2010, Manchester City Council put in place a contingency plan to keep its free swimming scheme afloat.

Likewise, the senior women retain top position in their UK National Premier League and are well set to win an unprecedented eleventh Premier League title in twelve years! The third match in the North of England Premier League also saw Sale, who train in Wythenshawe Park, retain top position just ahead of Blackburn AC who have won the league title for the past couple of years.

Care Partnership

The National Fostering Agency has signed a partnership deal with the Wythenshawe Town Juniors Football Club for a one year sponsorship period.

For the next year the NFA logo will appear on pitch side billboard advertising and NFA will be at football events throughout the year. This partnership is designed to raise the profile of fostering and the urgent need for foster carers in the Wythenshawe area.

5k Sizzlers

Read more...Four 5kms fun runs for all abilities, promoted to encourage health and fitness among Manchester communities are about to be launched in Wythenshawe Park.

Famously called The Sale 5k Sizzlers and now in their seventh year, over 500 people of every speed, shape and size jog their way around the flat, scenic 5k course within the park to become fitter, faster and healthier.

All are rewarded with goody bags of healthy nutritious products and those who complete all four events are awarded medals. The series is promoted by Sale Harriers.

This year participants are encouraged to raise money for St Ann’s Hospice currently celebrating forty years of caring for the people of Manchester. Sale Rotary Club is also providing special awards for Manchester residents...

The Housing Trust has always had a good relationship with the club after sponsoring the junior team kits and two advertising boards at the club, which is based on Longley Lane, Northenden.

Founded in 1876 they play in the Manchester & District Cricket League and have contributed to the development of cricket in south Manchester and Wythenshawe for many years. They are now assisting with cricket development in the local schools and academies supported by Manchester schools and play a big part in the local community for both sport and social activities.

Read more...Pupils from Saint Paul’s Catholic High School in Newall Green have enjoyed an amazing football season. The Year 8 school team had already won, two regional finals: the Greater Manchester Catholic Schools Cup and the Manchester Schools Cup.

The team put the final feather in their cap when they sailed to victory in the Greater Manchester Schools County Cup Final beating Chorlton High School 7-., with goals from Luke Rudden 2, Elvis Olanipekun, Lewis Gilchrist, Filip Lorkowski, Vashiko Dick and Ross Crowther.

Having not lost a match all season, despite playing against some very strong teams, the Boys Year 8 team were crowned the top team in the county.
