Men in vans have been attending homes that have old or rundown sheds and garages and offering to take them down and replace them with new ones.
In all of the incidents, the builders have told residents that they will only accept cash and have offered to accompany residents to the bank to withdraw the money
Once the old garage or shed is demolished, the builders have taken the money and disappeared leaving no contact number or receipt.
PC Steve McGonigle said: “This is a despicable scam, which leaves residents out of pocket and without a shed or garage to replace their old one.
“The builders have even gone to the trouble to show residents leaflets from genuine companies that they have absolutely no affiliation with.
“I’d like to urge residents not to buy services from people who cold call at their address. Instead deal with local or national reputable companies who have proper premises and have been recommended by friends or family.
“Residents should also ensure that they obtain a written quote before any money is exchanged and if you have any doubts, do not deal with them.
“If you have any concerns or spot anything suspicious then please contact the police on 0161 872 50 50.”
Councillor Jim Battle, Manchester City Council's deputy leader, said: "If a builder is so desperate for trade they need to knock on your door in search of work, they may not be very good. If you need some work doing, it is best to try and find a builder yourself, either online or through the Yellow Pages, and always ask for a recommendation from someone who has used that tradesman in the past. Never engage anyone who demands cash on the spot."
